Co-written by Paul Stroud and Johnny Bush, a genuine Texas honky tonk singer/songwriter, in 1972, it was covered by Willie Nelson on his 1973 smash album, Shotgun Willie. This has become Willie's signature song, usually opening his sets. While Johnny was beginning a rise to anticipated stardom he had the great misfortune to be stricken with Spasmodic Dysphonia, a neurological disorder that strikes the vocal chords. Owing to random attacks of muscle spasms, the voice is rendered raspy, strangled, whispery and tight. The symptoms can strike at any time, and while it sometimes goes into remission, it will return and is not considered curable. That pretty well put Johnny's career out of reach, he lost half of his vocal range and was dropped by RCA in 1974. Misdiagnosed until 1978, he developed a drug habit and performance anxiety when he could perform at all. In 1985 he worked with a vocal coach, regained 70% of his original voice and and his career was back on track, much of it spent touring with Willie and Merle Haggard. He has since won a national award for his work in bringing attention to Spasmodic Dysphonia and been inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame, the honors done by his lifelong friend, Willie Nelson.
