about

Written by Robbie Robertson of The Band in 1969. As Robbie was from Canada, Levon Helm, a band member from Arkansas, helped with research. The song has become part of “The Lost Cause of the Confederacy”, a belief system manifested in writings from the late 19th into the early 20th centuries. These beliefs were based on the largely inaccurate concepts that the war was one of Northern aggression into the South because of states' rights, minimizing or denying the issue of slavery; when slavery was considered it was portrayed as benevolent, not cruel. These beliefs saw the South as bravely defending a noble, chivalrous way of life. Joan Baez' cover in 1971 was a huge hit, earning top honors – Rolling Stone called it No. 245 of the greatest 500 songs of all time and it's in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It's been covered by numerous artists and is considered the iconic representation of the South's defeat, painting a picture of a people whose way of life was shattered and who were about to endure a harsh Reconstruction. The vast majority of Southerners were not slave holders and were actually fighting for a cause that was against their best interests; the existence of slavery was a major reason for the scarcity of jobs and pitiful wages with which they had to contend.
