1964-1966 TV series theme song, written and arranged by long time Hollywood composer Vic Mizzy. Released on a single which, while it did well, never made the charts. Recordings of other Mizzy theme songs did become hits and were covered by the likes of Doris Day, the Andrew Sisters, the Mills Brothers and Dinah shore. The Addams Family was heard throughout succeeding decades in films, including animated version, TV productions, commercials for Nestles and M&M's and a Broadway musical (2010-2011) starring Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth, opening April 2010 and closing December 31, 2011. Touring companies have been playing venues worldwide since.
Characters appeared originally in The New Yorker, created by cartoonist Charles Addams, who drew the one panel cartoons from 1938 until his death in 1988. Characters had no names and weren't fully developed until TV show emerged. Modeled on Addams' childhood memories from a wealthy neighborhood in Westfield, New Jersey, they were exaggerated in a family which, while fascinated by all things macabre, wasn't as macabre themselves as their appearances would suggest. Housed between a cemetery and a swamp, I suppose would dampen your outlook somewhat.
