about

A folk/rock song by Bob Dylan, it was first recorded with the Band on "The Basement Tapes" in 1967 and first released in 1968 by the British band, Manfred Mann, with great success. It is widely believed that the character was derived from the role of an Eskimo played by Anthony Quinn in “The Savage Innocents” in 1960. Dylan has described it as “just a nursery rhyme” about an Eskimo who, when he arrives, replaces despair with joy, chaos with rest and gets the attention of the animals. The first official release was on Dylan's 1970 album “Self Portrait", a live recording from 1969's Isle of Wight Festival.
