By Tom Waits, born in Pomona, CA, 1949. Taught himself piano as a child at a neighbor's house. Had a band in high school, long period of unrecognized saloon entertaining before any recognition; appreciated in Europe before at home. Hard to categorize – always stretching, experimenting, growing as an artist. Known as singer/songwriter, multi-instrument musician, actor, composer for films and musicals. Voice once described by critic Daniel Durchholz “like it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in a smokehouse for a few months then taken outside and run over by a car”. Accessed pre-rock genres of blues, jazz and vaudeville, always looking for new sounds and attitudes. Paints wonderful word pictures with his lyrics, such as “In The Neighborhood”, released in 1983 on the album Swordfishtrombones. In 1980 married Kathleen Brennan, met while working on Francis Coppola film, and been collaborating with her ever since on musical projects (and three children). Inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011, said at ceremony, with his typical humor, “They say I have no hits and that I'm hard to work with – like that's a bad thing.” Actually most of his hits came from covers by top artists – Springsteen's “Jersey Girl”, The Eagles', “Ol' 55” and Rod Stewart's “Downtown Train”.
