about

In a rainstorm, on the streets in NYC, 1955, in front of The Brill Building, with holes in his shoes, Otis Blackwell ran into a friend who asked had he written anything lately. He had and the friend directed him to a publishing house in the building. The Brill management liked his work so much they offered him a job. Several weeks later he heard that an up and coming rock and roll singer wanted to buy one of his songs, for half the writer's fee. At first Otis said no until his friends convinced him that half of something is more than all of nothing. So Otis met with Colonel Tom Parker, sold "Don't Be Cruel" to Elvis Presley and, well, you know the rest. It began as the B side of "Hound Dog" and that single became the only one in music history to have both sides make it to No.1 in the US! Otis also wrote "Return To Sender", "All Shook Up", "Fever" for Peggy Lee and "Great Balls of Fire" for Jerry Lee Lewis. No more holes in his shoes.
